What is an Accredited Investor?
An Accredited Investor (AI) is an individual or entity that has been certified by a SEBI-recognized Accreditation Agency as meeting prescribed financial eligibility criteria. The framework was introduced by SEBI to allow financially sophisticated investors to access certain investment products with greater flexibility than retail investors.
Eligibility Criteria (India)
An individual, HUF, family trust, or sole proprietorship must satisfy any one of the following:
- Annual income: At least ₹2 crore, OR
- Net worth: At least ₹7.5 crore, of which ₹3.75 crore or more must be financial assets, OR
- Combined criteria: Annual income of ₹1 crore plus net worth of ₹5 crore, with at least ₹2.5 crore in financial assets.
For other entities:
- Body Corporate: Net worth of at least ₹50 crore
- Trust (other than family trust): Net worth of at least ₹50 crore
- Partnership Firm: Each partner must independently satisfy the eligibility criteria.
